“Americans are not like westerners”

September 27, 2007

Heard in class during student presentations on the United States (part of a business class).

-“Unlike westerners, Americans are very religious.”
-“Another corporation based in the region is Intel. I wasn’t able to find what they make.”

…I mean, you almost have to try to say either of these…

Another gem, from last week, in the poorly researched department :

“The capital of Oregon is Salem, which is famous for the witch trials of the late seventeenth century”

Students. Isn’t that all the explanation one needs?

Oh, did I mention this one gem of we-didn’t-really-bother-with-proper-research(last week)?

“The capital of Oregon is Salem, which is famous for witch burnings”

(snort) that’s what the oregon trail game was about.

When they were saying “jimmy has dysentery” what they meant was

“i’z in ur witchez givinz ur jimmy’s dysentery.”

Is it just me or have you lately developed an inordinate fondness for the “in ur base” meme?

Imagine a witch trial in Salem, Oregon, in the 1600s.

The witness could testify to being turned into newts, and they WOULDN’T EVEN HAVE GOTTEN BETTER!

I”m actually not that fond of meme. I like using it for insanely absurd situations to point out the true absurdity. it is a silent protest. but like all things on the internet, emotion and subtlety are some of the hardest things to convey without tags.
